Calligraphy–The art of tranquility

182

What does calligraphy have to do with Reiki? Not very much in itself. Calligraphy is originally a Chinese writing art and this way of writing was adopted by Japan at some point. Yet, you can encounter it, especially if you are looking for a suitable design for your Reiki room or meditation room. We are happy to explain why a canvas with calligraphy fits very well there.

While calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing, gradually disappeared in the West after the invention of the printing press, this art form has continued to exist in Asian countries, including Japan. In fact, it is still seen in Japan as an important method for children to learn to read and write. The big difference with normal writing is of course that no pen is used, but a brush and (East Indian) ink.

Japanese calligraphy

The Japanese name for calligraphy is shodo 書道. The literal translation is the way of writing. That is how the process is seen. In Chinese calligraphy it is possible, as long as the ink is still wet enough, to make corrections in the brush strokes. In Japanese calligraphy there is only one way, with a brush stroke you create the character and if that fails, it cannot be corrected. You have to be in the 'now'.

This actually brings us to the heart of why a calligraphy image fits in a Reiki room or meditation room. When putting the characters on paper, you have a single chance. So ultimate concentration is required. Having a controlled and calm breathing is therefore important during calligraphy. The Japanese refer to this as Zen Buddhism. But you can also apply it to your own situation. You want to create peace in the room where you hang the calligraphy art and let yourself or others relax completely. And you follow your own path only once, there is no turning back.

Is there a thought behind the calligraphy signs?

Although calligraphy is very important in Japanese culture and is taught in schools, there are no rules about what should be written. It's more about the technique than the text. The stripes of the characters cannot be placed randomly on paper, this must be done in the correct order. That makes calligraphy fun, because it means that you can, for example, also have the name of your own practice space depicted in stylish characters.

The paper, hanshi 半紙, often used for calligraphy, is a form of rice paper and has a milky, white color. The Japanese traditionally only use black ink for calligraphy.

Calligraphy in the Reiki room

It is said that if you learn Japanese, you can reach a higher spirituality. And it contributes to having self-control. That is the connection with Reiki, because with Reiki you also experience spirituality and it brings you peace. That is why calligraphy is certainly a suitable way to decorate your Reiki room.

Choose appropriate images that are a valuable addition to your own Reiki or meditation room. Such as the five Reiki principles, a beautiful calligraphy of the Reiki character or a Buddhist saying. If desired, you can have the name of your own practice made in calligraphy on order. Please contact us for this, after consultation with the Japanese workshop in Kyoto we will then make you a suitable offer.
